84Metacritic · Xbox
83OpenCritic · Mighty

Critics broadly praised the opening half, the puzzles, exploration and character interactions, and the smooth, melee-forward combat. The heavier trauma-soaked second half and repetitive light puzzles drew the main criticism. Selected scores: PSU 9.5/10 · TheSixthAxis 9/10 · GameSpew 9/10 · GamingBolt 9/10 · Eurogamer 3/5 · IGN 6/10. For comparison, the series' own ratings are strong across the board, Requiem (often searched as "plague tale 2") and Innocence both hold Metacritic ratings in the 80s, and this prequel sits at 85 on PC.

The game

What is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

Resonance is the third entry in the A Plague Tale universe, but it's not a direct sequel. It's a prequel set 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem, telling the backstory of Sophia — the plunderer who helped Amicia and Hugo sail to La Cuna in Requiem. Asobo calls it a standalone spin-off: you can play it with zero knowledge of the series, though fans will recognise a much younger Sophia and hear echoes of the Macula curse that defined the earlier games.

The story is built on a striking structural gambit. The 14th-century plot, a young woman chasing the truth of her father's death, keeps interleaving with flashback sequences set in Minoan-era Crete, around 2,000 years before Christ. Through Sophia's visions you experience the island's trials through the eyes of a legendary warrior, and slowly learn that the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur hides the earliest known carrier of the Macula.

Mechanically, the game pivots hard away from the stealth-and-rats survival of Innocence and Requiem. Sophia is an agile fighter: the combat is fast, melee-first and parry-based, built around sword-and-dagger exchanges, kicks, grappling-hook pulls and a Focus meter. Light-based puzzles and tense creature-chase sections round out the loop. Reviews consistently describe the first half as excellent, smart puzzles, atmospheric ruins and warm character interactions, with the darker, trauma-heavy back half dividing opinion.

Inside the game

Story in brief · spoiler-free

A curse older than the plague

As a child, Sophia was taken to a convent where nuns used children in experiments, injections that gave her visions of an island and left dark veins creeping up her arm. Her father Alec rescued her, then died trying to reach that island. Years later, following a disastrous heist in Venice and the burning of her home, Sophia sails for Crete with the key, her father's book and a golden sphere.

Act 1The convent · the Plunderers' Den · Alec's death
Act 2Venice carnival · the arsenal key · a traitor in the gang
Act 3Minotaur's Island · Minoan ruins · a light-fearing creature
Act 4The truth behind Theseus, the Minotaur and the Macula
