What kind of game is Resonance?

Resonance is a linear, single-player, third-person action-adventure built on three pillars: combat, exploration and light puzzles. It is set 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem, on Minotaur's Island, and it runs on two timelines: Sophia's 14th-century journey and Minoan-era flashbacks as Theseus.

The important expectation to reset: this is not the stealth-and-rats survival of Innocence and Requiem. Sophia fights, and the game rewards aggression. If you are coming from the earlier games, spend your first hour unlearning the crouch-first habit.

Choosing your difficulty

Launch guides name three difficulties: Narrative, Normal and Hard, though the official names are not confirmed in the sources we use. What is confirmed is that you can change difficulty in the settings at any time with no penalty. On Normal, Sophia has 3 HP and health refills on kills, which pushes you to fight rather than hide. If the parry timing feels too tight, drop the difficulty; nothing in the trophy list requires a specific one.

Combat basics: parry and dodge

Combat is sword-and-dagger with parries, dodges, light and heavy attacks, charged criticals and a guard-breaking kick. The signal system is the whole game: yellow attacks can be parried and build up the enemy's stun bar, red attacks are unblockable and must be dodged. Learn to read the two colours in Chapter 1, because every later fight builds on it.

Use the grappling hook in combat

The grappling hook is not just traversal. In a fight, pull the archers down first so they stop shooting from range, then deal with the melee line. This one habit removes most of the damage in the open battles and is the first tip every guide repeats.

Skill tree and Resonance Points: spend early

There are 200 Resonance Points in the game and you need 165 to buy every skill across the six mastery branches. Spend them as you earn them. The catch is the missable rule: Resonance Points do not carry over through chapter select, they save only at the next checkpoint, and dying before a checkpoint means re-grabbing what you lost. Prioritise the parry-window skills early, since parrying carries the game.

Light puzzles with the Minoan Sphere

The sphere manipulates light: refracting beams, matching colours to gems and bouncing light off mirrors. When a puzzle stalls, trace the beam backwards from the receiver to the source and look for the mirror or crate in between. The optional puzzle rooms usually hold Resonance Points or Charms, so they are worth doing rather than skipping.

Explore everything: the missable warning

The game has 8 Blades, 37 Artefacts, 30 Charms and 200 Resonance Points. Two Blades unlock automatically, and six come from Hero Grave puzzles in Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10. Most collectibles can be recovered through chapter select, but Resonance Points and, by most guides, the tomb Blades are best collected on the way through. Read the crew notebook before each new area; it points at both puzzles and side routes.

Stealth: an optional tool

Stealth exists and some sections expect it, like the Creature chases and the petrified corridors, but it is not the game's core. Hiding through a fight means missing Resonance Points and upgrade chances, so the default is to fight and save stealth for the sections that demand it.

General tips

  • The island's dark lowers stamina recovery. Carry light into the underground stretches or place the sources you find.
  • Read the notebook before each area. It gives puzzle clues and marks optional paths.
  • Do not mash buttons. The parry timing needs deliberate inputs, and mashing makes red attacks hit harder.
  • In chase sections, light is safety. Stay close to it and use gaps to slow pursuers.
  • Difficulty has no trophy penalty, so tune it to your comfort.

Where to go next

The combat guide goes deeper on enemies and the parry system, the skills page covers the Resonance Point tree, and the walkthrough hub lists all 14 chapters. For the trophy side, start with the trophy guide.

FAQ

Should I collect everything on the first playthrough?

Only Resonance Points and the six tomb Blades. Points do not carry through chapter select, and the Blades are safest picked up as you go. Everything else can be cleaned up later.

Which difficulty should I pick?

The names Narrative, Normal and Hard are reported, not officially confirmed, but guides agree you can change difficulty anytime without penalty. If the parry timing feels tight, start lower.

Is stealth still useful?

It works, but it is optional. Skipping fights means missing Resonance Points and upgrade chances, so most players fight.

Can I go back for missed Blades?

Yes, through chapter select. Guides differ on whether any are permanently locked, so treat the six tomb Blades as first-run items.
